Eligibility Criteria

Stepping into… is a minimum four week paid internship for university students with disability.  

The program is designed to provide university students with practical skills and experience which will assist them to obtain long term employment within their chosen profession.  

Stepping into… is a joint initiative of the Australian Network on Disability and the participating organisations.   Applicants are applying to the Stepping into… program, not directly to the participating organisations.

If applicable, please note your preferred organisation in your application.

 

Stepping into... Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must have a disability.  As this is a targeted program specifically for students with disability, applicants are required to provide any relevant disability information and any information regarding adjustments or modifications that may be required for the duration of the program;
  2. Applicants must be enrolled in the penultimate or final year of a relevant degree at a recognised tertiary institution;
  3. Applicants must not be on a leave of absence from their studies (e.g. deferred, working full time, etc);
  4. Applicants must be committed and prepared to participate fully in the program and be available to attend a student briefing conducted by the Australian Network on Disability before starting the program.
  5. Applicants must be a Permanent Resident or an Australian Citizen with full work rights (applicants for Government programs must be Australian Citizens).
  6. Preference will be given to those applicants who have not applied for or participated in the Stepping into... program previously.

It is also preferable that students are registered with the Disability Support Unit/Office within their university.

 

Application Information

  1. Applications must be received by the Australian Network on Disability, by the nominated deadline;
  2. Applicants must specify the program they are applying for, their preferred location, as well as any preference for a specific organisation, on the application form;
  3. The program dates are flexible and will fit in with the university break. You will be advised of the specific dates at your interview;
  4. The Australian Network on Disability will review the applications to ensure each one meets the eligibility criteria set out above;
  5. Each participating organisation will assess candidates against that organisation’s individual criteria to select candidates for interview;
  6. Participating organisations will be responsible for notifying successful and unsuccessful candidates for interview and for offers of a placement;
  7. Each participating organisation is responsible for implementing its work experience program with the assistance of the Australian Network on Disability.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on all aspects of this program, including the application and interview process and the work experience program.  This feedback is invaluable in developing further programs to assist students with a disability gaining work experience in their field of study.
