Celebrating International Day of People with Disability

Wed 2 December 2020

International Day of People with Disability. Silhouette of a person.

This year’s UN sanctioned theme is ‘Building back better: inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world’. Let’s build back better in Australia.

There’s genuine enthusiasm to take bolder actions to be more inclusive and specifically to find ways to recruit more people with disability. Some state governments and the federal government have set targets to recruit people with disability and some private sector organisations are also setting targets. We have a chance to move the unemployment dial down.

It hasn’t moved down in 20 years.

It’s not enough to recruit people with disability, we all need to contribute to the creation of welcoming and inclusive workplace experiences. More than inclusion, we all want to feel that we belong. That every voice is heard. Where we value and adjust for differences. Today, specially, we celebrate differences.

COVID-19 has taught us to be more flexible and adaptable, to connect with each other – often, and to make sure that adaptions work for everyone. Everyone.

On this International Day of People with Disability who will you be talking with, planning with, and including in your discussions so that you can ‘Build back better?’
