Attorney-General's Department

Attorney-General's Department

The Attorney-General's Department (AGD) delivers programs and policies to maintain and improve Australia's law and justice framework. Through the Australian Government Solicitor, legal services are provided to the Commonwealth, including legal advice and representation.

AGD is the central policy and coordinating element of the Attorney-General's portfolio, for which the Attorney-General, the Hon Christian Porter MP, is responsible.

Strategic priorities for AGD are to:

  • Support the Attorney-General as First Law Officer by providing high-quality legal services to the Commonwealth.
  • Protect Australia by delivering effective national security policies and legislation.
  • Maintain an efficient and effective Commonwealth justice system.
  • Enable a free society with balanced rights, freedoms and responsibilities.

AGD recognises that a diverse organisation, with people of different backgrounds, views and experiences is good for staff, good for organisational culture, and good for business.
