Transport Accident Commission

Transport Accident Commission

The TAC is a Victorian government-owned organisation whose role is to pay treatment and support services for people injured in transport accidents. It is also involved in promoting road safety in Victoria and improving the State’s trauma system.

The funds the TAC needs to perform these functions come from payments made by Victorian motorists when they register their vehicles each year with VicRoads.

The TAC covers the costs of reasonable treatment and rehabilitation for accident related injuries, including:

•        ambulance, hospital, medical, pharmaceutical, therapy, dental and nursing services

•        non-medical services including income benefits, travel costs, equipment and attendant care

The scheme also has a limited common law provision; those who are very seriously injured (with a negligent party to sue), may be compensated for pain, suffering and economic loss.
