Disability Confidence Survey Report 2015
The Australian Network on Disability, in partnership with NSW Department of Family and Community Services (FaCS), Westpac Group, National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), IBM and Department of Defence, conducted a survey of 500 small to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs). Business owners, managers and staff at all levels of the organisations were interviewed via email and asked a series of predefined questions that related to their company's attitude towards people with disability.

Disability Confidence Survey: Key Findings
Overall Australian business has a positive attitude to employees and customers with disability
- 89% believe their organisation has a positive attitude to employing suitably skilled people with disability and 1 in 3 believe their organisation has employed people with disability.
- 80% believe they have some customers with disability and 53% of these say they have done something specific to assist customers with disability in the past year.
Positive attitude doesn’t always translate to action
- The lost dollar impact of inaction in Australia is significant. Many businesses may be missing out on an important market segment that represents over 4 million Australians and their families.
- 1 in 5 don’t think they have customers with disability but 60% of these have not proactively sought to find out if any of their customers have disability.
- 1 in 5 don’t know if any staff have disability or not.
Planning for positive change: 62% of all respondents said they are likely to make changes in the next year to make it easier for customers with disability to do business with them.
Results differed by industry sector
- 73% of Education and Training organisations, 71% of Hospitality organisations and 65% of Healthcare organisations had done something specific to assist one or more customers with disability in the last year.
- 80% of Hospitality, 74% of Education and Training and 72% of Retail organisations were likely to make changes in the next 12 months to make it easier for customers with disability to do business with them.
Regarding the forward-looking survey findings Colbert believes the outlook is positive: “We welcome the finding that 62 percent of respondents said they are likely to make changes in the next year to make it easier for customers with disability to do business with them. We intend to conduct the survey annually to measure progress over time.”
